Background

WIS is a secure web-based system developed by MSB (Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency) to support collaboration between authorities during societal disruptions. It enables government stakeholders to share critical information and coordinate efforts during crises.

Challenge

The system's interface, particularly for editors and administrators, had usability challenges. Information flows were difficult to grasp under pressure, and tools for publishing operational messages lacked structure and clarity. With limited access to classified material, I needed to make design decisions that supported users without exposing sensitive information.

Approach

  • Mapped key user journeys and simplified complex flows to enhance clarity and reduce cognitive load.

  • Improved the admin homepage to guide users more effectively to create, publish, and distribute critical updates.

  • Designed reusable components in close collaboration with developers, contributing to a shared design system.

  • Created mobile-first wireframes and test scripts for a scalable future version of the system.

  • Validated flows through internal testing, continuously iterating on feedback.

Outcome

The updated designs improved user orientation and made critical actions easier to perform under time pressure. By enhancing the structure and consistency of the admin interface, the project helped strengthen trust in the platform’s usability, especially in high-stakes situations. Contributions to the design system also laid the foundation for continued development.
